Are Free Credit Reports Really Free?
May 8, 2008

A law was passed in 2003 by Congress that made is a requirement of Trans Union, Experian and Equifax to be make a credit report available to all consumers one time each year for free. All you need to do is visit the Annual Credit Report website and request a copy of your credit report from all of the three major credit reporting agencies.
It is really incredibly simple to do and with a few clicks of your mouse you will have a complete credit report. All consumers need to be made well aware of all the “free credit report” websites that are on the internet. While they might sound great they are not actually free. The annual credit report website is the only website that consumers can visit for a 100% free credit report. The trick that many consumers fail to notice is that when you sign up to get a free credit report from one of these sites you are very often signed up for a membership program that you are unaware of signing up for and will very likely have a hard time try to unsubscribe from. Take a really good look at the fine print on these websites and you will see that you will be signing up for a trial service that you will be billed for if you do not cancel within a certain amount of time.
While many consumers that sign up for a free credit report thinking that is all that they are getting when in fact they are signing up for a credit monitoring service. Educated consumers should know that they do not have to sign up for a credit monitoring service because you can do it all yourself for free. You can request a copy of your credit report everything three months and you will do a more then sufficient job of keeping track of your credit.
